How to Keep Your Beans at their Peak
- Keep them in an airtight, dark container.
- Avoid sunlight.
- Avoid heat.
- Avoid steam (so consider where you are storing your beans and keep them away from brewers, stoves, etc.).
- Avoid moisture (storing near your sink could accidentally allow water to reach beans).
- Within 72 hours after being roasted coffee beans have reached their maximum or peak of freshness, so use them as quickly as possible.
- If you can’t brew them within the optimum time put your beans in the freezer.
Balancing Time and Amount
As discussed, green coffee beans begin to lose freshness right after roasting. Coffee experts recommend buying smaller batches of freshly roasted coffee more frequently – enough that can last one to two weeks.
If you keep coffee beans for too long, you’ll notice they eventually go stale, which will have a serious impact on the taste of your drink. Kitchen says, “drinking your coffee within two weeks of the roast date is a good rule of thumb.”
