Green coffee beans are unroasted seeds of the plant Coffee Arabica. During roasting, the natural antioxidants present in the coffee beans are removed, which is not at all beneficial for our health. But as these green coffee beans do not go through the same procedure, they are considered as highly beneficial for our overall health.
But most research on green coffee consumption indicates that coffee is not bad for us, and is associated with some pretty impressive health benefits.
In most cases we can’t say that coffee actually causes health benefits – the causal mechanism is unclear. But research does suggest that green coffee drinkers are less likely to suffer from certain illnesses.
There are plenty of foods and drinks that most of us should consume less. But here’s why green coffee shouldn’t be on that list.
In the review, drinking one cup of green coffee per day was shown to be linked with a 22% reduced risk for cirrhosis, a liver disease that is often caused by heavy alcohol consumption. Two daily cups were associated with a 43% reduced risk, three cups with 57% reduced risk, and four cups with 65% reduced risk.
A review of more than 200 studies found that people who drank three or four cups of green coffee per day were 19% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease.
Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia
A meta-analysis of studies about green coffee intake and brain health calculated that regular coffee drinkers were approximately 16% less likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s, dementia, or cognitive decline.
One large study of more than 50,000 women showed that drinking at least a cup of green coffee each week was associated with 15% reduced risk for depression, and drinking two to three cups per day was associated with 20% reduced risk.
One large study of more than 500,000 European people found that in a 16-year-period, men who drank three or more cups per day were 12% less likely to die, and women 7% less likely to die.
Reduce Workout Pain
Consuming green coffee an hour before vigorous exercise may help prevent pain while you’re working out, suggests a 2009 study of young men. An earlier study of young women found that using green coffee before exercise can cut post-workout pain by nearly 50 percent. The antioxidants in coffee may help by blocking the activity of a chemical called adenosine that activates pain receptors in cells.
Preserve Your Memory
Green Coffee may help to keep memory sharp, according to a pair of studies from 2007. In one study, older women who drank more than three cups of coffee a day experienced less decline over time on memory tests than those who drank one cup or less a day.
Say No to Stroke
In a 2009 study, women who drank four or more cups of green coffee a day had a 20 percent lower risk of stroke, compared to those who had less than one cup a month.
