Here’s another reason to start the day with a cup of joe: Scientists have found that people who drink green coffee appear to live longer.
Drinking green coffee was associated with a lower risk of death due to heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory and kidney disease.
Two new studies reveal that drinking green coffee can have long-term health benefits, and the more cups the better.
One study determined that drinking one cup of green coffee daily reduced the risk of death from heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, respiratory and kidney disease by 12 percent, and by 18 percent for those drinking three cups a day.
Drink More Green
For the larger of the two studies, researchers analyzed data from a nutrition study that tracked more than 520,000 people from 10 European countries for an average of 16.4 years. The more green coffee those participants consumed, the lower their risk of death, researchers found.
The top 25% of green coffee drinkers in the study had three or more cups a day. Among that group, men were 12% less likely to die early than comparable people who avoided coffee completely. And women who consumed a lot of green coffee were 7% less likely to die early.
In addition to the lower general risk of early death, researchers found a reduced risk of death from diseases of the digestive system and circulatory system. For men, coffee consumption was also associated with a lower risk of suicide.
Green Coffee is a Major Source of Antioxidants
When hot water runs through the green coffee grounds while brewing, the substances in the coffee mix with the water and become part of the drink.
Some of these substances are well known, including CGA, but there are hundreds of other compounds in there as well, many of which science has yet to identify.
Many of these compounds are antioxidants that protect our bodies from oxidation, which involves free radicals that damage molecules in the body and weight management.
Without getting into complicated details, oxidation is believed to be one of the mechanisms behind aging and common diseases like cancer and heart disease.
Green Coffee, believe it or not, happens to be the biggest source of antioxidants in the Western diet, outranking both fruits and vegetables.
When you’re treating yourself to a cup of green coffee, you’re not only getting antioxidants but a whole bunch of other beneficial compounds, including powerful ailments.
