Where does the Fat Go after Drinking Green Coffee?

For those who are high on green tea but are also willing to give something new a try, here's good news. There is an additional fat buster on the scene. It's called green coffee.

What is it?

While coffee beans usually get their dark hue after being roasted, green coffee beans are actually coffee beans that haven't been roasted yet. Said to taste different from the regular cuppa Joe, the green coffee bean has low or contains no caffeine that has no side-effects. It also has an antioxidant that might induce weight loss by lessening the absorption of fat and glucose in the gut and lowering insulin levels.

A site quotes Lona Sandon, assistant professor of clinical nutrition at an American university, saying that the chlorogenic acid content in green coffee beans could have an effect on fat loss.

How Chlorogenic Acid Helps in Fat Loss?

Coffee beans are a great source of phytochemicals – Chlorogenic Acid. Chlorogenic acid is the one that has weight loss properties. However, roasting the coffee bean can destroy the chlorogenic acid, which is why green coffee extract is suitable for those who want to lose weight.

Researchers have found that chlorogenic acid can help improve insulin sensitivity by downregulating the genes responsible for inflammation-induced weight gain and galanin-mediated adipogenesis. Chlorogenic acid can also prevent fat absorption and boost fat metabolism in the liver, thereby aiding weight loss. The green coffee extract can also help lower blood sugar and keep insulin spikes in check.

Apart from improving fat metabolism, chlorogenic acid also normalizes the obesity-related hormones. Chlorogenic acid has also been found to lower plasma triglyceride and cholesterol levels in mice. Finally, chlorogenic acid also helps in weight loss by decreasing the absorption of sugar.

According to Dr. Simran Saini from Fortis Hospital, "Chlorogenic acid in green coffee acts as an antioxidant. It helps in controlling high blood pressure, aids weight loss and maintains blood sugar levels in the body."

So, it is clear from all the studies mentioned above that green coffee bean targets the root causes of weight gain and therefore can be a potential weight loss agent.

Green Coffee Dosage

The recommended dosage of chlorogenic acid for weight loss is 200 – 400 mg/day.

Anything in excess can be dangerous. Therefore, limit your green coffee intake to only 3 cups every day. Drinking excess cups of green coffee will not reap any faster results.

Tip Avoid drinking green coffee immediately after a meal.
